Matilde César (Madeira, 2002) is a visual artist working primarily with photography and moving image. She holds a degree in Photography from Universidade Lusófona in Lisbon and develops a practice centered on the relationships between memory, territory, identity, and belonging.

Born and raised in Madeira, her practice often stems from the relationship between the individual and place, exploring how landscapes, gestures, and personal stories shape collective memory. Working across both analog and digital processes, she is particularly interested in the documentary nature of the image and in the possibilities of photography as a tool for research, preservation, and transmission of memory.

Her photographic work was presented in the group exhibition Duas Verdades, Uma Mentira at P28 in June 2024. Her first short film, Foi Com O Mar, premiered at IndieLisboa 2025, marking the beginning of her journey into filmmaking.

Throughout her practice, she has been awarded the José Ribeiro Marques Torres Prize by Rotary Club Lisboa Centro in 2022 and was a scholarship recipient of NYU Tisch School of the Arts in 2020.
